They were supposed to be alone on this island. There was a caretaker, but he didn’t show up without notice. They didn’t have any neighbors for miles of open ocean. Who had joined them? Dave kept his cool as he headed down the stairs to the front hall, wishing there were some windows to see out of. He briefly considered telling Alyx to check out who it was from the balcony, but didn’t want to scare her. Biting the bullet, he unlocked and opened the door, looking out into the dark. There in the wind and rain stood three strangers. Eyes traveling over them, Dave could see there were two men around his age and a younger woman. He was about to demand answers when one of the men stepped forward, obviously the impromptu leader of the group.
“Hey man, we’re sorry to drop in on ya, but our boat just wrecked…”
Dave listened as he explained they had been out on the water when the storm came in, making them rip open the bottom of their boat on the reef nearby. They’d made it to shore by pure luck. He looked to the other two as they collaborated his story. It certainly did look like they’d near drowned out there. He backed up into the house, letting them in out of the rain at least. He didn’t even notice Alyx until she had joined them downstairs. “Babe, I told you to wait upstairs…” But the talkative one chimed in, “We really don’t mean any harm, ma’am. We just need some help.”
Dave quickly looked over at the man, water still dripping from his lanky blond hair and onto the floor, then back to her. “These people had an accident on the water. Landed here.” He stood between his wife and their guests, and again the man spoke up, “How rude of us. Didn’t even introduce ourselves. My name’s Lee and that’s Beth and Rick.” He held out his hand and Dave leaned in to shake it, giving the other two the same courtesy. “I’m Dave, and this is my wife Alyx. It’s nice to meet y’all…” He nudged the door shut to keep the rain out. “And if you don’t mind waitin’ here just a moment, we’ll be right back.” They all hastily agreed despite their state and Dave hustled Alyx back up the stairs to the living room. Lowering his voice, he murmured, “What should we do with ‘em?” He stole a quick look over the stairs where the three were still huddled together waiting. Dave was a Southern man, and usually more welcoming, but something about these people just put him off a little. Maybe he’d seen too many horror movies.
Alyx kept the frown off her face as she stayed behind David. She didn’t trust people easy, especially not ones who drop in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night. She nodded to the three and stayed quiet. She tucked her hair behind her ears as David and her went upstairs. She shook her head, hissing out, “I don’t know what to do with them? There’s no where they can really go now but here. It’s late and…” She jumped at another crack of thunder, reminding them that they couldn’t get off the island via their boat yet. She shrugged, sighing softly. “They have to stay. We can’t send them out in this.” She leaned her forehead on his chest, having a horrible feeling about this.
It was true, hospitable or not, there was nowhere else for those people to go. Dave rubbed her shoulders as she jumped at the thunder, trying to calm her down. He nodded, saying quietly, “All right. That’s what we’ll do then. I’ll give them rooms downstairs…” He tilted her face up and kissed her forehead before pulling away from her and going back down the stairs to Lee, Beth, and Rick. Offering them a small smile, he said, “You guys aren’t getting anywhere in this weather. Let me show you the spare rooms. We’ll take care of this in the morning.” He glanced back to see if Alyx was watching before leading them off to the bedrooms, opening doors. “Don’t know if any of you are together,” he said, looking awkwardly between the men and the woman before continuing, “but there’s two beds there. Bathroom across the hall.” They could split themselves as they may. He got fresh towels out of the hall closet and put them in the bathroom for them.
Lee gave him a tight smile. “We really appreciate it, Dave. Thanks.” The way he spoke for the group was unnerving, and Dave nodded and glanced past him at the other two. Beth gave him a smile, already putting her pack in one of the bedrooms, but the other one just looked stoic. Maybe he was tired. “I’ll let you settle in then. See you all in the morning.” With that he went back upstairs to Alyx, already eager for this night to be over with. “Babe?”
They needed a break. Between willful toddlers and cars turning the store into a drive-thru, they were both frazzled, in need of a break, and needing some time to themselves. Alyx had decided that date night, would be date four day weekend at the island. So she packed a few teeny bikinis, some filthy lingerie, and some casual clothes for herself and some island wear for her husband. She arranged for grandma to come sit the kids. And then she told her husband they were getting away from it all.
Thursday morning, bright and early, Alyx finished packing, got herself ready, and kissed her kids good bye. It was a rough goodbye, always was. They were her babies. But once the kids were settled with pancakes and grandma her and David left with their portal stone.
The house on the island needed opened up and they had to make a trip to the mainland to get groceries for their weekend. They loaded into the boat and she let David head to land, her eyes sticking to watching his ass so that she wouldn’t get seasick.
Lately work had been, well, hell. What else could he expect of the hellmouth that was the GrabbitKwik? Nevertheless, Dave was tired of working extra shifts and coming home late after disaster struck. That meant when Alyx announced their impromptu trip/date, he was all for it. That morning he showered and got the kids ready for the day while Alyx did whatever it was women needed to do to prepare for a few days away. He was grateful when his mother arrived, ready for their goodbyes and some vacation time. No doubt grandma would spoil the kids rotten while he and Alyx were gone.
They appeared on their island with the help of a little magic and unlocked the house, throwing their bags into the bedroom. The fridge and pantry were empty so that meant a grocery run. They walked down to the pier and Dave got the little speed boat ready for them, helping Alyx into it before taking off to the mainland and shopping. He looked back a few times as the wind whipped through their hair and laughed at Alyx’s slightly green look, not noticing her focus on his ass. “Just don’t feed the fish!” They reached dock without any trouble and Dave tied up the boat while Alyx quickly clambered out of it. Then it was just a matter of a short walk to the grocery store, with maybe another stop for some beer and wine. It wasn’t a vacation without booze after all.
At the store, they loaded up the essentials, laughing in the freezer aisle as they playfully bickered over whether ice cream was a necessity, and then if it would make it back to the island unmelted. It turned out that ice cream, among many other items, were all crucial to the integrity of their date, and Dave had quite a haul to bring back to the boat. Once their groceries were loaded up, they headed back to their secluded getaway island for some time alone. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t cooperating, and as they got the last bags inside the house, the first crack of thunder struck, turning the beautiful day into a downpour. Dave blinked out the kitchen windows in disbelief as Alyx unpacked groceries. “Can you believe this? I didn’t even think to check the weather…” he said gloomily as he watched the rain come down. So much for frolicking naked on the beach.
She had just opened the first grocery bag when the thunder cracked, making her jump. She stared out the window with David, hand hand searching for and finding his. “I didn’t either.” She squeezed his hand and turned the radio on to get a weather advisory. Relieved they hadn’t come for a hurricane or something she turned it to music and continued putting away their groceries. “It’ll burn itself out by morning, babe. We’ll get to have fun.” She pushed the ice cream at him and grinned. “Worst case? We’re stuck inside for four days and get to hang out and be naked in bed?”
She slapped his ass and turned from the window, tired of looking out into the storm. She didn’t notice the dark figures moving through the rain outside. “Make drinks, baby!” She wasn’t going to let a little rain… well rain on her parade. She spun around and turned the radio up to drown out the thunder.
He squeezed her hand back as he looked out at the darkening evening sky, the wind whipping the trees. It was a good thing they had gotten off the water before the storm started. He turned from the window as Alyx turned on the radio, listening to the weather report before she turned it to something more cheerful. “I dunno, love. We’re here just in time for rainy season.” He smiled as she slid the ice cream across the counter at him. “Yeah, I guess I can’t complain about that.” He peeled the top off the carton of ice cream and groaned. “I told you it’d go all soft!” He tilted the squishy container at her with a raised brow before closing it again and shoving it in the freezer.
Growling as she slapped his ass, he did as she said, taking ice out of the freezer and dropping some into a couple glasses, making them drinks. He laughed as she turned up the music, calling out, “You tryin’ to make me go deaf, babe?!” He caught her mid-twirl and pressed a drink into her hand before dragging her out to the living room. He dropped onto the comfortable couch and sipped his drink, laughing as Alyx squeaked and jumped at a booming clap of thunder. Storms didn’t bother him.
Their first drinks were down and Dave was encouraging Alyx to strip when a louder banging from downstairs made them go still and silent. He looked over at Alyx with her wide eyes and tried to reassure her. “Probably just a shutter or something got loose in the wi-” But he was interrupted as the banging started again, more persistently. That was no loose shutter. It was too human, and now accompanied with muffled shouts. “Wait here,” he said to her, setting his empty glass down on the coffee table and getting up. Someone was here.
Once she was settled on the couch with a drink in her hand, the storm wasn’t exactly scary anymore, even if it did cause her to jump more than once. She just curled herself in closer to David and sipped her drink down. It was already relaxing, just to be with him and away from home. David was already smiling easier and looking more at ease.
“No! I’m NOT stripping. You haven’t gotten me drunk enough.” She laughed until there was a banging from downstairs, louder than the storm and the music. Her lips pursed and her eyes were wide. Who the hell would be out on their island in this kind of weather? Who would be out there period? She gripped his hand when he got up, and nodded. “All right, babe.” She waited on him to leave the room before getting up from the couch and turning the music down.
She heard the door open up downstairs and then voices. She peeked down there, seeing three people standing just inside the door, and David. They were wet from the storm of course. She forgot her husband’s warning to stay there and started down, giving him a questioning glance as she hit the bottom step. “Babe, what’s going on?”
They were supposed to be alone on this island. There was a caretaker, but he didn’t show up without notice. They didn’t have any neighbors for miles of open ocean. Who had joined them?
